چکیده

Background 4D flow MRI is a powerful tool to measure timeresolved three-directional blood flow in the pathological and healthy aorta. The 3D aortic velocity measured with 4D flow MRI allows for derivation of 3D wall shear stress (WSS), which is believed to be related to vessel wall remodeling and possibly an important biomarker for aortopathy. However, it is still unclear how variability of the 3D vessel segmentation needed for 3D WSS calculation and/or scan vs. rescan changes in the underlying 4D flow MRI data can affect the reproducibility of the results. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the test-retest reproducibility and interobserver variability of 4D flow derived 3D velocity fields and 3D WSS in the thoracic aorta.

3D quantification of wall shear stress using finite-element interpolations from 4D flow MR data in the Thoracic Aorta

Background Actual methods to quantify wall shear stress (WSS) are performed on reformatted 2D planes from 4D flow data sets. This approach has the inherit limitation that only a few planes are analyzed on specific locations of the aorta, even though the full 3D velocity field is usually available. Another problem with this approach is that the process of locating 2D planes manually is dependent...

Study of Pulsatile Non-Newtonian Blood Flow Through Abdominal Aorta and Renal Arteries Incorporating Fluid- Structure Interaction

Background: The interaction between the blood and the vessel wall is of great clinical interest in studying cardiovascular diseases, the major causes of death in developed countries. Objective: To understand the effects of incorporating fluid-structure interaction into the simulation of blood flow through an anatomically realistic model of abdominal aorta and renal arteries reconstructed from CT...

RV work efficiency is greatly reduced in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension as evidenced by 4D flow cardiac MRI

Background The dynamic assessment of intracardiac flow remained challenging until the recent development of timeresolved 3D phase-contrast CMR (PC-CMR), which allows for assessment of multi-dimensional whole heart and great vessel flow. Previous studies have used this technique in the ventricles to quantify flow type of the ventricle and the kinetic energy of each flow component. In the great v...

Ascending aortic wall shear stress and distensibility are different in patients with corrected atrioventricular septal defect compared to healthy controls: a comprehensive CMR and 4D flow MRI evaluation

Background In patients with an atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD), the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) and the ascending aorta (AAo) are located more anteriorly due to the position of the common AV valve. This may alter proximal aortic flow, and we hypothesize that this can result in impaired LV systolic function and AAo wall degeneration. We aimed to quantify differences in AAo wall s...

Beta-blocker therapy does not reduce ascending aorta wall shear stress in patients with bicuspid aortic valve

Methods Right-left coronary leaflet fusion BAV patients on b-blockers (BB+) (n = 30, M:F = 23:7, age: 46 ± 14 years) and not on b-blockers (BB-) (n=30, M:F = 23:7, age: 46 ± 13 years) and healthy controls (n=15, age:43±11 years) underwent time-resolved, 3D phase contrast (4D flow) MRI. Patient groups were matched by systolic blood pressure (SBP), degree of aortic stenosis (AS), and AAo diameter...
